Your relatives may have given a “cleaned-up” family history, but we’ll find some skeletons in this fast-moving workshop.

The staff of the Cedar Park Public Library and Library Director Pauline Lam were recognized at a City Council meeting recently for receiving the Achievement of Excellence in Libraries Award from the Texas Municipal Library Directors’ Association. Other CTLS libraries receiving this award were Boerne (Library Director Kelly Skovbjerg), Edinburg (Library Director Leticia Leija), Harker Heights (Library Director Lisa Youngblood) and Temple (Library Director Judy Duer). The award recognizes libraries who have met 10 criteria, including literacy support, web presence, and outreach to underserved populations. Congratulations!

Lake Travis Grand Opening!

Congratulations to Library Director Morgan McMillian, longtime supporters Nancy Pencsak and Carol Black, and a host of friends, staff members, community supporters, and volunteers! Judging from the photos, the new Lake Travis Community Library is a beautiful new space for patrons and staff to enjoy. This is their first stand-alone building. The library started out at Lake Travis High School. then went off on their own into rented space in a shopping center. Among many successful fundraisers which got them to this point is an annual Dancing with the Stars gala. Best wishes to all!

Out of This World Event at Edinburg

“Out of this World” Conference & Festival held Saturday March 15^th and 16^th in Edinburg, Texas

Edinburg- Stanton Friedman, the world’s top UFO expert, and Travis Walton, whose UFO encounter inspired the Paramount movie Fire in the Sky, were the featured speakers at Edinburg’s “Out of This World” Conference & Festival, held on Friday, March 15 – 16, 2013, at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance and City Hall Court Yard in Edinburg, Texas.

The conference also featured a lecture by South Texas UFO researcher Noe Torres, author of Mexico’s Roswell, Aliens in the Forest, The Real Cowboys & Aliens, Ultimate Guide to the Roswell UFO Crash, Fallen Angel, and four other books. Born and raised in Edinburg, Torres has maintained a life-long interest in UFOs that was inspired, in part, by a strange encounter his mother had in Mission in the 1940s. Sponsored by the Edinburg Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation and the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library, the day-long event was held on March 15^th and 16^th.

Bell/Whittington Library a Finalist

Congratulations to the Bell Whittington Public Library, Portland, TX and Rose Aleta Laurell, Director!

This library was named a finalist in the IMLS Best Small Library in America competition!

“Serving a population of 15,099 in a satellite community near Corpus Christi, this library does an awful lot with the $29 per capita budget at its disposal. The judges noted innovative outreach that can easily be duplicated by other libraries, while judge Julie Hildebrand called it “amazing considering the size of their staff,” just three full-time, four part-time. The library’s recent record of programming with high attendance numbers and a strong focus on technology is well demonstrated by the “Seniors in Cyberspace” program held in partnership with senior centers and other community sites such as the local Dairy Queen restaurants. Attendance for the course reached 1,758, with evaluations showing 100 percent rate of achievement in signing up for new email addresses.”

22nd Annual Mystery Night

Presented by Friends of the Round Rock Public Library

The Friends of the Round Rock Public Library will once again host Mystery Night the first two weekends in April. The play will be Curl Up & Dye by Chip Hadley and directed by Bill Craig. This annual fundraiser for the library features food, fun and frivolity where the audience is encouraged to interact with the cast and play detective themselves!

Time: 7:30 pm – 9pm, 2:30 pm – 5:30 pm
Date: 4/5, 4/6, 4/7 & 4/12, 4/13, 4/14
Location: Round Rock Public Library

Cost: $15, $18, $25

About the play
Curl Up & Dye is an exciting mystery play written by Chip Hadley and admirably directed by Bill Craig.
The sleepy little Texas town of Cedar Valley is about to be woken up and not in a good way. Come along and meet the friendly residents who include a gossipy hairstylist, a nervous veterinarian, an ex-minor league baseball pitcher and a cosmetics sales woman who is a bit too friendly, especially with other women’s husbands.

Please join us for Mystery Night, an annual fundraiser for the library featuring food, fun and a three act play where the audience is encouraged to interact with the cast and play detective themselves!

Curtain times: Fri. & Sat. 7.P.M. – Sun. 2:30 P.M. Doors open ½ hour before curtain time.

Pflugerville Opens New Wing

Pflugerville Public Library’s Great Hall

The library in Pflugerville has a new wing, a new name, a new telephone number, and a different address!

They didn’t move, but added on to the building in a way that puts the entrance on another street, hence the new address.

The former Pflugerville Community Library is now the Pflugerville Public Library at 1008 W. Pfluger Street in Pflugerville, 78660. Their new telephone number is 512-990-6375.
